Welcome to Trezor Start

Your journey to ultimate crypto security begins here.

Congratulations on choosing Trezor, the world's original and most trusted hardware wallet. This guide will help you unbox, set up, and secure your digital assets in minutes. Follow these simple steps to establish a fortress for your cryptocurrencies.

Before You Begin: What’s in the Box?

Ensure your package contains all the necessary items and that you purchase only from our official Trezor Shop or an authorized reseller to avoid tampered devices.

  • Trezor Device: Your new Trezor Model T or Trezor Safe 3.

  • USB-C Cable: For connecting to your computer or compatible Android device.

  • Recovery Seed Card: (2x) For writing down your secret 12, 24, or 12-word recovery phrase.

  • Stylus: (For Trezor Model T) For using the touchscreen.

  • Getting Started Guide: Quick visual instructions.

  • Trezor Stickers: To show your love for security.

You will also need:

  • A computer (Windows, macOS, Linux) or an Android phone with USB-C.

  • A private, uninterrupted space for setup.

  • A pen for writing on your Recovery Seed Card.

Step-by-Step Setup Guide

Step 1: Connect Your Trezor

  1. Go to suite.trezor.io/start in your web browser. This is the only official setup page.

  2. Connect your Trezor to your computer using the provided USB-C cable.

  3. Follow the on-screen prompt to install Trezor Bridge (the communication software) if necessary. The page will guide you.

Step 2: Install Firmware

  1. Your Trezor Suite will automatically detect your new device.

  2. You will be prompted to install the latest firmware. This software is the foundation of your device's security.

  3. Click "Install Firmware." This process ensures your device runs the most secure, up-to-date software from SatoshiLabs.

Step 3: Create a New Wallet

  1. After firmware installation, choose "Create new wallet."

  2. Select "Standard seed backup" (recommended for most users) for the highest security.

Step 4: Backup Your Recovery Seed (THE MOST CRITICAL STEP)

This is the master key to your entire wallet. If your Trezor is lost or damaged, this phrase is the only way to recover your funds.

  1. Your Trezor device will display a list of words (12, 24, or 12 words) one by one on its own screen. This is your Recovery Seed.

  2. Write down each word in the exact order on your provided Recovery Seed Card. Use a pen.

  3. Never, ever:

    • Type it on a computer or phone.

    • Take a digital photo or screenshot.

    • Store it in cloud storage or email.

    • Share it with anyone. Trezor will never ask for it.

  4. Confirm your backup by selecting the words in the correct order on your Trezor device when prompted. This verifies you've written it down correctly.

Step 5: Set a PIN

  1. Add an extra layer of physical security with a PIN.

  2. Your Trezor device screen will show a randomized number grid. Use your computer to enter the corresponding PIN positions.

  3. This PIN protects your device from unauthorized physical access. Choose one you can remember but isn't easy to guess.

Step 6: Explore Trezor Suite

Once setup is complete, you’ll enter the full Trezor Suite—your dashboard for all crypto activities.

  • Receive Crypto: Get your first receiving address under the "Accounts" tab.

  • Send Crypto: Easily send assets to anyone.

  • Buy/Sell: Use the integrated exchange partners to buy crypto directly to your wallet.

  • Track Portfolio: View your balances and history in a clean, secure interface.

Your Next Steps to Mastery

  • Give it a Name: Personalize your device in Trezor Suite settings.

  • Enable a Passphrase (Advanced): For a "hidden wallet" within your wallet, adding a 25th word of your own creation. This offers plausible deniability and extra security.

  • Explore Apps: Use Trezor Suite with third-party DeFi and NFT platforms like MetaMask (via "Trezor Connect").

  • Stay Updated: Firmware updates are crucial. Trezor Suite will notify you when new updates are available.

Why Your Setup Choices Matter

Trezor is designed to be secure by default. By following these steps, you ensure:

  • Private Keys Never Leave Your Device: All transactions are signed inside the isolated chip of your Trezor.

  • You Hold the Only Backup: The recovery seed is generated offline and displayed only on your device's screen.

  • Protection Against Digital & Physical Threats: PIN protects the device; the seed protects your wealth from loss.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What if I lose my Recovery Seed?
If you lose your Recovery Seed and your Trezor is lost, stolen, or broken, your funds are irrecoverably lost. No one, not even SatoshiLabs, can restore them. This is the core principle of self-custody. We urge you to store multiple copies of your seed in safe, offline, and physically separate locations (e.g., a fireproof safe, a safety deposit box).

2. Can I set up my Trezor on a mobile phone?
Yes, but with limitations. You can set up a Trezor Safe 3 or Model T with an Android phone using a USB-C cable and the Trezor Suite app (beta). For iOS, a direct cable connection is not possible due to Apple restrictions, but you can use your Trezor with compatible iOS apps via a desktop bridge.

3. I bought my Trezor from a third party (e.g., Amazon, eBay). Is it safe?
We strongly recommend purchasing only from our official shop. While many third-party sellers are legitimate, there is a risk of receiving a tampered device. If you used a third party, always ensure the firmware installation is genuine during setup (Step 2). Trezor devices are designed to show a warning if pre-installed firmware is not official. If you see this, stop and contact support.

4. What's the difference between the PIN and the Passphrase?

  • PIN: A short code (4-50 digits) that unlocks the device itself. It prevents someone from using your physical Trezor.

  • Passphrase (Advanced): An optional custom word (or string of characters) that acts as a "25th word" to your recovery seed. It creates a completely hidden wallet. Anyone with your seed but without the passphrase cannot access these funds. It provides an extra layer of security and plausible deniability.

5. Do I need to keep my Trezor connected all the time?
No, absolutely not. Your crypto is not stored on the device; it's on the blockchain. Your Trezor simply holds the private keys to access it. Disconnect it and store it safely when not in use. You only need to connect it when you want to send transactions or check your portfolio securely in Trezor Suite.

6. What if my Trezor is stolen?
Remain calm. The thief cannot access your funds without your PIN. You have ample time to recover your assets. Simply acquire a new Trezor (or any compatible BIP39 wallet), enter your Recovery Seed in the correct order, and your entire wallet will be restored. Your PIN is only for the stolen device.
